Julia Ma
Glass

I blow glass because I love the material, the science, and the art. I started glassblowing at the MIT Glass Lab and have taken classes in Boston and the SF bay area. I have also been to the Pilchuck Glass School in 2018 and Haystack Mountain School of Crafts twice (2012 and 2016), where I lived/breathed/worked in glass.

A 3D experiment with multiple stacking layers, after fusing. As you can see, the multiple layers just sank into each other. **

Fused flower. **

The anti-Mondrian plate, after fusing and slumping. A hole appeared during the slumping, which I assume is from the glass incompatibility.

A 3D-perspective ball from laser-cut stencil, after fusing. The 3D effect didn't really work.

Dragon vase with blue body wrap. Donated to 2021 PyLadies auction.

"wood" in glass on wood. I accidentally wrote "mood" first.

Trapped a glass ball inside this...which is harder than it sounds. You have to keep the bottom of the bowl cold enough so that the ball doesn't get stuck, but then heat the lip hot enough to close it up.

Nest-like shotglass.

Crackled vase. This texture is made by dunking the glass into water. **

Pulled-neck vase with a strand trapped inside. **

Cane cup.

Orange and blue vase. The orange glass turned out to be incompatible with the clear, hence the cracking..

Vessel: an arterial one.

Cane bracelet. **

Glass links. This is tricky to make as the temperatures of various parts need to be cold enough to not stick and hot enough to move.
